The Employment and Training Administration (ETA) has launched the Green Jobs Community of Practice (CoP). The Green Jobs CoP will serve three primary purposes: platform for workforce professionals and green job thought leaders to discuss and share promising practices and provide technical assistance.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has recently posted new information about the 2010 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) on their web site. A document on the page contains classification principles and coding guidelines for the new SOC, as well as a crosswalk linking the 2000 and 2010 versions of the classification.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has developed several crosswalk files that link occupations from the Occupational Outlook Handbook to other resources. Included are links from OOH titles to their O*NET equivalents and a file that contains the Internet addresses (URLs) for OOH statements. The Department of Labor invites the workforce development system to participate in the Tools for America's Job Seekers Challenge. The Challenge seeks to help jobseekers and workforce development professionals identify and use online job search and career advancement tools. The Challenge utilizes an innovative method called crowdsourcing to allow jobseekers and workforce development professionals to recommend and comment on job search and career advancement tools. An orientation webinar is planned for January 10, 2010.

The 2010-11 editions of the Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Career Guide to Industries have been released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Considered the Government's premier source of career information, the Handbook and Career Guide profile hundreds of occupations and dozens of industries, respectively. Both publications are available online.

December 10, 2009 - BLS reported that total employment is projected to increase by 15.3 million, or 10.1 percent, during the 2008-18 period.
The 2010-11 editions of the Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Career Guide to Industries will feature the 2008-18 projections.

The Workforce Information Council has released a special report Measurement and Analysis of Employment in the Green Economy. There is no common definition of "green" jobs nor any common manner to analyze the "green" economy. This document analyzes definitions and approaches taken in existing research, focusing on studies done in California, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Connecticut and New York.

The workplace is going green and so are the O*NET web sites! Each of the O*NET web sites (O*NET Resource Center, O*NET OnLine, and O*NET Code Connector) has a new look with improved site navigation, new features, and considerable emphasis on green jobs and the green economy.

The Workforce Information Council (WIC) has been working together for over ten years to plan, guide, and oversee the nationwide workforce information system. Their website is a great resource for meeting notes from OES, QCEW, CES, and LAUS & MLS Policy Councils and standing work groups (e.g. Green Jobs). The International Labour Organization has recently released the sixth edition of its Key Indicators of the Labour Market resource (KILM). The KILM compares 20 "key" indicators of labor market conditions in over 200 countries. The KILM can be downloaded or used online.

O*Net has redesigned its Code Connector website. The site provides improved, more user friendly assistance to workforce professionals who are determining the correct O*NET-SOC codes for job orders, job applicants, and UI claimants. Key items from the O*NET Database are displayed so that workforce personnel can quickly select an O*NET-SOC code.

The LMI Training Institute announces a new Board lineup and a new management structure for 2009-2010. The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center serves as the administrator of the Institute and has contracted with the Council for Community and Economic Research as part of an effort to re-energize the Institute and better align its offerings to meet the needs of producers and users of local economic and workforce data.

O*NET has released a new research report entitled "Greening of the World of Work: Implications for O*NET-SOC and New and Emerging Occupations". This report investigates the greening of the world of work, the impact of the Green economy on existing occupations, and identifies new and emerging green occupations. The report is available in the Research and Technical Reports section of the O*NET Resource Center.

ETA Announces Competitive State LMI Improvement Grants

On May 15, 2009, ETA issued a Training and Employment Notice (TEN) 44-08 to the workforce community outlining initial plans for awarding green job training funds. One of the competitive grants is a competition to collect, analyze, and disseminate labor market information, as well as develop a labor exchange infrastructure to direct individuals to careers in the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors. Workforce3 Establishes Recovery Clearinghouse

The recent passage of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides nearly $4 billion in stimulus funding for employment and training services delivered through the publicly-funded workforce system. In addition, the new law provides additional resources and incentives to modernize the unemployment insurance system as well as an expansion of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program.
To assist in this effort, Workforce3 One has established a Recovery Clearinghouse where technical assistance materials and state and local implementation examples are being posted for use and adaptation. 3/11/2009
Due to the down turn in the economy, the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration has made the decision to cancel the 2009 Workforce Innovations Conference scheduled for July 21 - 23.
